This odd looking image is the combination of two
separate images. The right half is the same image shown above
(3-DAY OLD MOON) combined with a longer exposure on the left of the
earthshine-lit Moon. Earthshine is when the reflected light from
the Earth onto the Moon illuminates the normally darkened portion of the
Moon allowing us to see it faintly lit. Imaging earthshine
produces a very overexposed crescent so I did some work with Photoshop
to combine the two into a fairly accurate representation of what you
would see through the telescope.
