Occasionally, when I have some free time, I enjoy doing some pencil drawing.

NOTE:  Many of these are large scale replicas of other artists original work.  The portraits are reproduced from photographs.  The drawings are done in graphite pencil.  Most of the images have been scanned and look much like they do in person.

trex.jpg (113062 bytes)

Attacking T-rexThis was my first drawing in many years.  It was done entirely with a standard #2 pencil!

Astronaut Gene Cernan salutes the flag on Apollo 17, the final Apollo mission to the Moon.  Cernan was the last Apollo astronaut to walk on the Moon.

 pentaceratops.JPG (501333 bytes)

Pentaceratops on the defense!  (my first attempt at shadows and shading...)

buzzmural2.JPG (421319 bytes)

This is a near life-sized mural of Astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin on the surface of the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969.  I painted it on the wall of my son's old bedroom. The entire painting was done with standard flat black and flat white wall paint mixed in different combinations.  It took about a week to complete.

archeopteryx.JPG (434876 bytes)

Archeopteryx... dinosaur-bird connection??  Feathers are not fun to draw.... LOL

ALDRINFLAG.JPG (179376 bytes)

A drawing of Astronaut Buzz Aldrin saluting the American flag.... drawing the flag was a bit of a challenge since it was a bit "crinkled"...

skull.jpg (274435 bytes)

 T-rex skull

ALLANBEAN.JPG (97288 bytes)

Astronaut Alan Bean during the Apollo 12 mission.  I chose to draw this picture due to the complexity of the shading.

Check it out!  This guy emailed me and asked if he could use my drawing for a tattoo.  He actually did it and emailed me the picture... Very Cool!

a16buggy.JPG (106100 bytes)

Apollo 16 astronaut John Young prospecting in front of the lunar rover (in the background).  I chose this picture because I wanted to try drawing the lunar rover.

velociraptor.JPG (324394 bytes)

Velociraptor on the attack.... (note the feathers on the head and back..)

Apollo 15 astronaut James Irwin saluting in front of the lunar module and American flag.  I chose this picture because I wanted to try drawing the Lunar Module and it would allow me to experiment with color.

apatasaurus.JPG (152955 bytes)

An Apatosaurus (formerly incorrectly called Brontosaurus) is swimming for its life trying to elude some attacking allosaurs.  Note the very large mesozoic crocodile (swimming near the bottom) for scale.

shuttlemural1.JPG (346475 bytes)

This is the mural on the other wall of my son's old bedroom.  It is the Space Shuttle Discovery launching from Cape Canaveral Florida.

Portraits

Historical

captain_ben.JPG (55376 bytes)

This is Captain Benjamin F. Sanford, U.S. Army; WWII... my late grandfather.  This was my first attempt at drawing a portrait of a real person... it is a bit intimidating!

soldier.jpg (135837 bytes)

This was inspired by a rather patriotic moment... it is a real but anonymous World War II soldier drawn from a photograph.

me.jpg (252698 bytes)

This is me in a rather contemplative mood.  This is my first (and perhaps last?) self-portrait.

titanic.jpg (273736 bytes)

I guess you can say I caught a bit of Titanic fever.   This was drawn from an image on the cover a book written by one of the official Titanic historians.   The book was one of the main sources James Cameron used to write the screenplay.

ashleyat2.JPG (51246 bytes)

This is my oldest daughter when she was 2 years old.

Fiction

trevor_swing.JPG (93213 bytes)

This is my son when he was about 2 years old.

BUGSBUNNY.JPG (90790 bytes)

I just thought it would be cool to draw Bugs.

trooper.jpg (109347 bytes)

An Imperial Stormtrooper.  This drawing was made from a picture in a catalog for a plastic model.  The picture was about the size of a large postage stamp, so the details in the laser-gun are not that great.
