During
my sabbatical leave in 1998, I fulfilled a long-term goal
of mine – writing down my thoughts about the art of practicing.
The result was a booklet (otherwise called a monograph)
titled Practice Makes Perfect:
A Handbook for Musicians at Work.
In it, I try to summarize many of the insights I’ve
had over the years about the art of practicing.
Although I am a pianist, I wrote the book in general
terms, so that it is applicable to any musician.
Many music students and professionals have told me
that the book has been very useful, and a source of ideas
on how to improve their working skills.
The
book is available from the Palomar College Bookstore, at a
cost of less then five dollars.
