Objectives:
By the end of this laboratory you should be able to do the following:
Learn how to use the Library’s resources to research scientific topics.
Learn how to use the Internet to research scientific topics.
Work in groups to answer a list of physiological psychology questions.
Begin the research for your Web Page Design topic.
In today’s laboratory you will learn to use the resources of the library and the Internet to research physiological psychology. For this laboratory we will use the computers in BE-6. After I give you some guidelines for collecting information, we will break up into groups and begin a scavenger hunt on the Internet. A scavenger hunt is a game in which individuals or teams set out to accumulate, without purchasing, a series of common, outlandish, or humorous objects, with the winner being the person or team returning first with all the items. For our scavenger hunt you will be accumulating information by answering a series of physiological psychology questions. To get credit for an answer you must include the URL (Universal Resource Locator) or Web address used to answer the question. You have 15 minutes to train and organize your team. Make sure your teammates know how to use bookmarks, back, forward, and search engines.
Your team must answer all of the 20 questions to receive the 10 points for this laboratory. The team that answers the most questions will be awarded an extra 10 points for the lab. Second place is worth an extra 5 points, and the bronze medal will earn you 2 extra points. I will distribute the questions when it is time to begin. To minimize chaos, please avoid using auditory web sites. Also, use of pornographic web sites are a private matter and completely inappropriate in this public setting. Despite these restrictions, try to have some fun with this assignment. Good luck.
Some useful links:
Dogpile (http://www.dogpile.com/index.gsp)
An excellent all encompassing search engine.
PubMed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/)
An excellent site for finding primary articles on any scientific topic.
Scientific American (http://www.sciam.com/)
An excellent journal with full length articles and tons of great links within each article. This is a must first stop for research on any topic concerning human biology.
Behavioral and Brain Sciences (http://www.bbsonline.org/)
Behavioral & Brain Sciences (BBS) is an international, interdisciplinary journal of "open peer commentary," published by Cambridge University Press, with its editorial offices in Southampton UK and New York NY. Yale Medical Library (http://info.med.yale.edu/library/)
This link goes directly to the Yale Medical Library page. It is massive. An outstanding resource with among other things, links to hundreds of electronic scientific journals. The only downside is that access is restricted for many of these. This site is still a powerful resource tool.
American Psychology Association Journals (http://www.apa.org/journals/)
The APA Journals Page contains a listing of hundreds of electronic APA Journals. You can browse the journals alphabetically or by subject. There appears to be no restrictions on access but some journals only contain abstracts.
Harvard Bioscience Information Section (http://mcb.harvard.edu/BioLinks.html)
This site has links to electronic journals, conference information, organizations and biologically based search engines. Quite simply a mass of information.
Sleep Research Home page (http://bisleep.medsch.ucla.edu/)
This page offers a great deal of information pertaining to sleep research . There are links to abstracts, full length articles and clinical or research groups. Whether your interested in Narcolepsy or Apnea this is a great first step for your research.
Cognitive Sciences Eprint Archive (http://cogprints.soton.ac.uk/)
CogPrints is an electronic archive for papers in any area of Psychology, Neuroscience, and Linguistics, and many areas of Computer Science, Philosophy, Biology, Medicine, Anthropology, as well as any other portions of the physical, social and mathematical sciences that are pertinent to the study of cognition.
Psychology Journals Online (http://www.tnstate.edu/library/journal/onjnpsy.htm)
From Tennessee State University, this site contains dozens of electronic psychology journal links. Some of these links have full-text articles on them. Unfortunately you will have to figure out which links have the full-text articles yourself.
Neuroscience on the Internet (http://www.neuroguide.com/neurojour.html)
This site has a great deal of information concerning electronic journals that deal with issues of neuroscience. It also breaks down the journals that have full-length articles available. This is an excellent resource.
