AMS 100: American Identity and Culture

Final Exam

Your final will be a sequence of 6-7 essay questions of which you will answer only 4. These questions will deal with the class notes and the specific readings from Brown and Ling. Questions will address the factors that shaped the author's identity and culture reflected in the experiences being described in the reading. Your essay response should be 1/2 a page to a 1 1/2 pages each. There might be a question that allows you to refer to the artist that you chose to review or refer to your own experiences.

On the day of the final, you should bring your text/ readings to class as well as notes and artist papers that you did.

Typical questions might be:

 

1. How do Charles Eastman's experiences shape his career as a writer? How was he influenced by W. E. B. DuBois?

 

2. How does art effect one's identity? Pick an art form that you relate to or wrote about and characterize the influence on a  person's identity.

 

3. What are some of the factors that contribute to prejudice and racism in a America? Give two examples from the readings, an artist or your own experience.

 

4. How does fame and materialism contribute to our identity and culture? What is the role that Hollywood and the music industry play in this?
