I received my BA in Psychology in 1971 from Occidental College in Los Angeles, and my Ph.D. in Psychology in 1975 from the University of California, Irvine. During my graduate years I was awarded a Public Health Service Predoctoral Research Fellowship, and a University of California Regents Patent Fund Grant. In 1975, I was awarded a National Research Council Postdoctoral Research Associateship at the Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton, Connecticut. Most of my predoctoral and postdoctoral research was human factors related to adaptation to distorted vision. (I worked mostly with divers at the Sub Base.)
I began teaching at Palomar College in 1976 . At Palomar, I have taught Introduction to Psychology, Physiological Psychology, Research Methods in Psychology, and Statistics. From 1987 to 1989 I spent two years as a visiting professor at the University of California, Irvine teaching Experimental Psychology, and Computers in Psychology, and conducting human factors research on unintended acceleration in automobiles. I have published many research articles on human factors, visual perception, and the teaching of psychology. I am the author of two college textbooks, Psychology in Action, published by John Wiley & Sons, and Behavioral Statistics in Action, published by McGraw-Hill.
I received the Palomar College Research Award in 1996, and the 1997 NISOD Excellence Award for contributions to teaching and learning from the National Institute of Staff and Organizational Development. I received the Association of Community College Trustees Pacific Region Faculty Member Award in June 1998. I was elected a Fellow of the American Psychological Association in 2000, and I received the American Psychological Association Division Two National Teaching Award for Community/Junior College Teachers of Psychology at the 1998 APA convention in San Francisco. At Palomar College I have been a professor since 1976. I have also served as the Chair of the Behavioral Sciences Department, the President of the Faculty Senate and the Dean of Social & Behavioral Sciences. I am currently a Professor of Psychology and the Interim Assistant Superintendent/Vice President for Student Services at Palomar College.
